Outreach activities like giving interviews for newspapers, TV and radio shows or attending panel discussions are very important to me. I share my research results with a broad public to inform as many people as possible about conservation issues, so that they become interested in them, and maybe even get actively involved in conservation activities.
Since 2016 I give statements for new science studies for the Science Media Center with citations in different print-media, for example for “Crossley et al. 2020. No net insect abundance and diversity declines across US long term ecological research sites. Nature Ecology & Evolution 4:1368-1376“ with statements of 8 scientists with me being the most cited researcher in for example Die Zeit, Der Spiegel, Deutsche Welle, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Tageszeitung-TAZ.
Since 2007 I participated in more than 20 TV documentaries and TV science discussions such as in Planet Earth, W wie Wissen, Terra X, Planet Wissen, Kika (ARD/ ZDF TV for children), ZDF Mittagsmagazin, ZDF Wissen with Harlad Lesch, Dirk Steffens or quest of Gert Scobel (2007 for “The system bee“ and 2020 “Illusion of Nature“). Some of the documentaries with me as protagonist received national and international awards.
Since 2005 I gave almost 100 interviews for radio broadcasts and print media such as ARD Tagesschau, ARD Tagesthemen, ZDF Heute, n-TV, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, DLF Nova, Brigitte, GEO, Greenpeace Magazin, der Spiegel, Die Welt, Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung, FAZ – Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Neue Züricher Zeitung (NZZ), WWF Magazin.
Since 2004 I wrote articles for the general public; for example in Geo Forum, FAZ, Anliegen Natur, Deutsches Bienenjournal, Insektenatlas of the Heinrich-Böll foundation and participated in several panel discussions for example for the Leopolidina/DFG or at cultural festivals.
I participated in interviews for the DFG science TV about for example “explicit biases in grant proposal review processes”.
I am co-author of the book “Das wächst in deiner Stadt: #Krautschau – 95 Pflanzen erkennen” (Kosmos) which was released in February 2023.
